Technological District

"The Italian Technological Districts began several years ago, centred around a few companies that acted as territorial aggregator, making a certain number of quite important SMEs, microenterprises, start ups and university spin-off grow” (M. Cipolli – responsible of the Tecnalia workgroup on the Technological Districts). According to the definition of A. Musumeci – general manager of the Information services of the Ministry of Education, "the Technological Districts are aggregations of public and private bodes, that may be territorially based or also on have a wider base and therefore be “functional” with the precise aim of innovating" . the fundamental components that identify a Technological District are:

  • A research and innovation component whose aim is precompetitive development, which will therefore lead to experimentations and prototyping;
  • An industrial development component whose aim instead is implementing tangible products and solutions that can be put on the market.

"If one of these aspects is missing, the District does not exist. It is not an abstract or theoretic definition, but we have very precise and strict qualification criteria, that in fact have led to the identification and recognition of some districts, excluding others" (Musumeci). The role of the District is, in a certain sense, the intermediary between research and industry, between public and private, with the commitment of the Ministry of University and Research to guarantee an equal role between the parts.

The Calabria Region, in concert with the Ministry of University, has identified in the Gioia Tauro area the premises for the creation of the Technological District for Logistics and Transformation.

This area is in fact at the centre of an important development in the Logistics sector and the connected services, driven by the relentless increase in the traffic volume registered by the port over the last years (world leader in container traffic).

The aim of the creation of the technological District is to therefore develop this economic asset attempting to strengthen the existing connection channels with the numerous research centres of the area (University of Calabria, University of Reggio Calabria, CNR) that have reached levels of excellence in the Logistics sector.
